Add a spoken language
rec4 transcribes your voice and follows it in the teleprompter using the speech recognition built into macOS. It only offers languages your Mac can recognise on-device. Here's how to add one.
- Open Dictation settings. Go to System Settings › Keyboard › Dictation.
- Add your language. Turn Dictation on if it's off, then add the language under Languages.
- Dictate a few words once. Press the Dictation shortcut in any text field and say something in that language. This starts the download of the offline speech model.
- Give it a minute. macOS downloads the model in the background — usually about a minute.
That's it. The language now appears in rec4's Spoken language list, and the teleprompter follows your voice in it. If rec4 was open, switch back to it and the list refreshes on its own.
Your audio stays on your Mac
rec4 only uses on-device recognition. Your voice is never sent to Apple's servers or to rec4 for transcription. That's why a language has to be downloaded for offline use before rec4 can use it.

Not every Dictation language has an on-device model. If yours doesn't show up after a few minutes, email [email protected] and tell us which language and macOS version you're on.
